Ever since I saw the works of famous Spanish artist Joaquin Sorolla at the Prado Museum in Madrid, where the light danced over his canvases, he has become the inspiration for my work. He once said, “You should not know what your picture is to look like until it is done, to see the picture that is coming”.
He was right, I now just start painting and the works just evolve as the brush moves over the canvas.
Starting in a corner of the canvas, or top, or middle, or wherever, no longer remembering all the rules is such freedom and provides great pleasure. It is like that feeling you had when you were young, and played around with the paintbrush, making strokes and musing at the images that emerged.
Being able to see and feel the view in front of you with light bouncing from many directions, and then letting the brush caress the canvas, making shapes from nowhere, truly makes me feel as though I have found my secret place. Especially when you stand back and look at the finished work and find that more than just an image has been captured.
